Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, and is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island off Canada’s Pacific coast. The city has a population of about 80,017, and is part of the Greater Victoria metropolitan area known as the Capital Regional District, which has a population of 344,615, making it the 15th most populous Canadian metro region.  

Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, with British settlement beginning in 1841. The city has retained a large number of its historic buildings, in particular its two most famous landmarks, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings (finished in 1897 and home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia) and the Empress Hotel (opened in 1908).  

Vancouver Island  is a large island in British Columbia, Canada. The island is 460 kilometres in length and 80 kilometres in width at its widest point.  It is also known as the “City of Gardens,” Victoria is an attractive city and a popular tourism destination. 

A mountainous spine, called the Vancouver Island Ranges run most of the length of the island, dividing it into a wet and rugged west coast and a drier, more rolling east coast.  Vancouver Island climate is the mildest in Canada, with temperatures on the coast even in January being usually above 0 °C (32 °F). In summer, the warmest days usually achieve a maximum of 28–33 °C (82.4–91.4 °F).
