Safety Orientation & Training

Visitors

Visitors are persons touring the facility (or parts there-of) for a short period of time and who will not be undertaking any research or other work activities on behalf of the university. This can include visiting researchers, VIPs, media representatives or student groups.

All Visitors are to be escorted around the facility by LSC / LSI staff and are to be given a suitable safety orientation, including emergency procedures, etc.

Visiting media representatives doing work for an external agency are to be escorted around the facility by LSC / LSI staff and are to be given a suitable safety orientation talk prior to commencing work.

Workers

Workers are persons that are to perform administrative, laboratory, research or any other tasks as part of their employment duties or for research purposes at the LSC. This includes all full-time and part-time Faculty and Staff (including paid Graduate Students) and can include undergraduate students and volunteers.

There are two main categories of workers at the LSC:

1. Non-laboratory Staff – this includes personnel whose duties do not require them to work within a research laboratory.

Non-laboratory staff at the LSC are required to complete the LSC On-line Safety Orientation for Non-Laboratory Personnel, which includes a supervisor-guided orientation to the workplace and work duties.

2. Laboratory Staff – this includes personnel whose work or research duties require them to work within a research laboratory.

There are two categories of laboratory staff:

1. Those performing laboratory work under direct supervision: This generally applies to short-term / summer students (or similar)
2. Those performing laboratory work independently (without direct supervision)

Orientation and Training Requirements for Laboratory Staff

As per BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and University Policy;

Lab personnel working under direct supervision are to complete:

1. The LSC On-line Safety Orientation
2. A supervisor-guided workplace and task orientation
3. The Introduction to Laboratory Safety course (on-line)

Lab personnel working independently (without direct supervision) are to complete:

1. The LSC On-line Safety Orientation
2. A supervisor-guided workplace and task orientation
3. Laboratory Safety Training Courses, including:
   1. Laboratory Chemical Safety Course (mandatory)
   2. Laboratory Biological Safety Course (mandatory)
   3. Radio-isotope Safety Course (when required)
   4. Other courses (as required)

Note: These courses are offered on-line by the UBC Department of Safety and Risk Services.

As per regulation and university policy, all orientation and training activities are to be documented and the documents maintained by supervisors. To keep a record of worker training and orientation activities, Supervisors may use the following LSC Worker Orientation and Training Record.
